The Disciple – The episode begins in Deming, Missouri where a young man talks with his mother over the phone after coming out of the grocery store. When he gets in his car, he is gassed by someone in a gas mask.
Elsewhere, Colter Shaw (Justin Hartley) meets with Keaton (Brent Sexton) to discuss a few questions he has about the Gina Picket Case. Keaton first wants to know about Frank Whales (Ryan Dorsey), who supposedly followed Gina and was at the mall every day except for the day she disappeared. The second thing Keaton wants to know is why it took Gina 10 minutes to get to the parking lot when the store she worked at was right next to the loading dock. Colter wanted to know the same thing. The conversation doesn’t get much further thanks to a call from Camille Picket (Floriana Lima).
Colter asks Camille if Gina ever mentioned the name Alex Silva (Johnny Rey Diaz). She says that she didn’t. She also tells Colter that she doesn’t want to hear anything else about Gina unless it is solid.
When Colter goes back to the table, Keaton brings up the fact that Silva said that Whales said he lured Gina in. This leads to Colter thinking that Gina might not have been taken from the mall parking lot. Colter and Keaton visit Whales and ask about Silva.
The guy in the gas mask tells Brandon that they are going to be very good friends. While questioning Whales, Colter finds a sparkly hairpin in his wallet. Whales admits to being with Gina but claims he wasn’t the one who hurt her. He then tells the story of how he ended up with the hairpin and kept it out of guilt. When he is finished, Colter tells him that he is going to introduce them to The Teacher. Whales claims he hasn’t seen The Teacher in years as Keaton put him in Colter’s truck. After this, Bobby Exley (Eric Graise) calls with a story from a crime chat form that sounds similar to Whales’ story. The guy’s screen name has been dormant for years and his last post was pretty dark. Bobby thinks The Teacher is still hunting because one of the Internet forums thinks that he took a young girl named Hannah Olson (Erika Bruci).
After speaking with Bobby, Colter and Keaton make Whales take them to the farm. On the way there, Whales tells them stories about The Teacher. At the farm, Keaton and Colter find a secret room that leads to the discovery of a skeleton and several videotapes, including one of Gina. After calling the cops, the skeleton is determined to be a male, and Whales is taken to jail. Sometime later, Colter and Camille go back to the police station to watch the videotape with Gina’s name on it. After watching the taps, Keaton interrupts to tell Colter that Sheriff Yates (Steve Makaj) is going to give them six hours before he calls the FBI. Keaton decides that he is going to go back to The Farm to question the neighbors while Colter says that he has his people working on finding out who owns The Farm.
The Teacher tells Brandon Stokes (Hudson Williams) that he doesn’t need to be afraid because everything he has done has been for him.
When Reenie Greene (Fiona Rene) shows up at the station, Colter asks her to represent Whales so that he will cooperate with the police. She is hesitant at first but he talks her into it.
Velma Bruin (Abby McEnany) tells Colter that The Farm belongs to Patrick Campbell (Mel Tuck). Along with sending him Patrick’s current address, she tells him that he has a record of indecent exposure and voyeurism. Colter calls Keaton to give him Patrick’s address.
Reenie works with Whales to learn what he knows. He is hesitant at first to offer any help until Reenie tells him that The Teacher possibly took another girl.
Colter arrives at the address to learn that Patrick is staying in a private nursing home, Sally Anne’s (Sandy Minh Abley) place. His daughter and son-in-law also happen to be there with his grandkids. Colter tells Noah (Nicholas Lea) and Kayla Darview (Jody Thompson) about the body found at The Farm. Noah and Kayla had no idea and admit to not having the property taken care of. Patrick has dementia so he isn’t much help. At one point he does chime into the conversation and says that he let Colter leave at the barn. Colter practically ends up leaving empty-handed.
Keaton meets Colter outside the nursing home to tell him that Whales, Silva, and the dead guy are all on the sex offender list. This leads to Colter realizing that The Teacher might be using the list sex offender list as a hunting ground to find his disciples. Then, Keaton chimes in about Brandon Stokes also being on the sex offender list and disappearing a week ago. They are currently waiting on a location for Brandon’s cell phone.
Reenie shows Whales Brandon’s picture and asks if he has any idea where The Teacher might have taken him. He agrees to talk only to Colter but only after she tells him that he is likely to go down for Gina’s murder. Whales agrees to take Colter to where The Teacher was holding Gina.
Colter leaves Whales handcuffed to the truck when they arrive at the old hospital. Once inside, it doesn’t take Colter long to locate Hannah. After finding Hannah, Colter calls Keaton to tell him the good news. At this point, Keaton has tracked down Brandon’s phone on the side of the side but no Brandon. At about the time Colter tells Keaton where he is, The Teacher shows up outside the room Hannah is being held in. Before Colter can go after him, The Teacher releases some kind of gas into the room. Colter manages to himself and Hannah out without incident. Outside the room, Colter is attacked by Brandon. Just as he gets the upper hand on Colter, Whales shoots him in the back.
Whales also manages to track down The Teacher and is holding him at gunpoint at one point. The Teacher talks him into putting the gun down and eventually slices his throat, but just as he does, Whales shoots him. Colter hears the gunshot and finds Whales but The Teacher is already gone. Colter eventually manages to catch up with and apprehend The Teacher, who at this point has been revealed as Noah.
Reenie and Colter give Camille a profile on Noah and tell her that he confessed to killing Gina. He also apparently told them where he buried the bodies. Sometime later, Camille eulogizes Gina at her funeral. Camille and Colter briefly talk after the funeral. She tells him that she is probably going to do some traveling in Europe. After this, Colter thanks Keaton for his help and tells him that if he ever finds himself in a bind again, he will call him. The episode ends with Colter driving off with his RV.
Tracker Review
This was a pretty great episode, and it was nice to see Keaton and Colter back together on the same side. That said, I do have some qualms with the episode. First, the police would have likely already tried tracking Brandon’s phone and found it beside the road. He had been missing a week. Second, I highly doubt that the police would have let Colter drive off from the station alone with Whales. I get that there needs to be some embellishment for TV but these two seemed a bit much for much and kind of turned me off. Other than that, I did enjoy the episode and plan on continuing to watch it. I’d have to give the episode a 6 out of 10.
