Girls Like Us – The episode begins with a police broadcast while a man and woman lay on the ground as if dead. All of a sudden, the woman wakes up.
Elsewhere, Sunny Patel (Agam Darshi) shows Kye (Ennis Esmer) a video of herself sleepwalking. Shortly after this, she asks to see surveillance video of the building. He logs into the computer and shows it to her. She appears to only go into the elevator and step back off. The conversation ends when Tess Avery (Dolly Lewis) calls.
Sunny guides Tess through what appears to be some type of protest. At one point, Tess gets lost in the crowd and can’t hear Sunny’s commands. By the time the police show up and start pepper spraying people, Matt Alleyne (Jarord Joseph) arrives and guides Tess out of harm’s way. Matt tells Tess about the officer using excessive force and Tess promises to talk to Superintendent Bennett (Roger Cross) about it.
Jake Campbell (Daniel Gillies) talks Tess through the crime scene and tells her about the victims. When Jake says the attack was likely poison, Tess suspects that the assailant could be one of the staff or guests. After learning that the protestors stored the building, Sunny guides Tess to the emergency exit in the kitchen. She opens the door and the alarm goes off but she feels a sticky residue on the latch. She suspects that someone might have disabled the alarm and re-enabled it once the protestors left the building.
At the hospital, Tracy does not remember an alarm going off when the protestors raided the building. All she heard was a lot of obscenities and yelling.
Back at the station, Detective Leo Li (Tony Giroux) purposely lets it slip that Jake is getting transferred to a special assignment next week. Seconds after this, Leo gets a text from campus security saying that their surveillance footage revealed one of the protestors sneaking in as a caterer and messing with the food.
When Tess questions Jude (Madonna Gonzalez) she admits to rigging the door open for the protestors but denies poisoning the food. She also admits to getting a badge from a Kith and Kin follower with the screen name – Truthseeke25. The conversation doesn’t go much further because someone starts a fire behind Tess using the protest signs.
After Tess goes swimming, she turns to Matt for help with the Kith and Kin lead. He agrees to look into it but asks about the officer at the protest. She tells him that they are reviewing the incident and that the officer will likely get reprimanded. The conversation doesn’t go any further because Tess receives a call from Jake.
Jake tells Tess that Gavin was poisoned with strychnine. The only problem is no traces were found in the food, drinks, or in the campus dining hall. He also shows her the contents from Gavin’s office at the campus. While looking through the stuff, Tess tries talking to Jake about the transfer. He tells her that it is an undercover operation that could take him away from six months. When he asks what she thinks about him leaving, she tells him that he’s got to do what’s best for him. Before things go any further, Tess realizes that strychnine has a bitter taste and would need something strong to cover the taste.
Back at the hospital, Tracy admits to both her and Gavin being addicted to breath mints. She says that if they were tampered with it would have to have been before lunch because they were locked in Gavin’s office. The only people who had access were her, Gavin, Samantha ‘Sam’ Sinclair (Helena Marie), and Phil. Shortly after this, Sam shows up and tells Tracy that she should speak at Gavin’s funeral. Tess and Sam get into an argument she and Jake question her alone.
Shortly after that, Jake learns that Gavin and Tracy’s breath mints were poisoned. Rae (Tegan Moss) also found carbon residue in the coffee cup but it is being sent off for further testing. While at the station, Tess also learns that Matt has leaked the footage of the officer apprehending the protestor at the riot.
Matt doesn’t even bother denying posting the footage and says that it is better than a reprimand. While he and Tess continue to argue about this, Sunny notices that the footage also shows Phil at the protest.
While waiting for Jake to bring in Phil for questioning, Tess and Sunny discuss the vast difference in Phil and Trurthseeker25’s beliefs. Sunny has also learned that Tracy wrote some really interesting sociology essays during her college days. This leads to them discovering that Tracy wrote Gavin’s speeches. They also use this along with what they’ve learned from the case to gain access to Truthseeker25’s social media profile. The day before Gavin died, he/she said they were going to cut the head of the snake.
When questioned, Phil admits to him and Gavin both being Truthseeker25. He says they did this to insight a protest because protests bring in the donations. He also admits to being at the Kith and Kin office and noticing that one of the accounts had been emptied. He suspected that Gavin knew who emptied the account and was going to talk to him.
After questioning Phil, Jake and Tess decide to divide and conquer. Jake is going to take Gavin’s e-mails and texts while Tess takes Kith and Kin’s financial records. While going through the financial records, Tess and Sunny discover that it was Sam and Gavin who made the withdrawal.
Sunny rigs her door to knock over a bucket of nickels and wake her up in the event that she goes sleepwalking. When this wakes her up, she hears yelling down the hall. She alerts Kye and he checks things out but doesn’t find anything.
After sharing her discovery with Jake, he and Tess deduce that Sam and Gavin are having an affair. Shortly after this, Tess discusses the discovery with Tracy, who apparently already knew. She just didn’t know with whom until now. As Tess is discussing this with Tracy, she receives a call. While Tracy is gone, Sunny guides Tess to a wastebasket where a book is. This book is called Family by Louis Gasson and has an inscription from Sam that says – From our college library where it all started, to better days. When Tracy comes back from the call, Tess learns that Sam is currently in Gavin’s office, planning for the funeral. By the time Tess gets there, Sam is gone but left behind her purse. Tell finds a letter and a pack of breath mints. This leads to them learning that it was actually Tracy who poisoned Gavin and herself. She is going likely going after Sam, so Tess calls Jake.
The cops can’t find Sam at her apartment, her relatives, or Kith and Kin. Tess remembers the library book and the message and realizes that Tracy might have lured Sam to the library. While Tess goes after Sam at the library, Tracy goes live with Gavin’s funeral broadcast. It takes a bit, but Tess eventually finds Sam, drugged and nearly dead. At the same time, Jake arrests Tracy live on the broadcast.
Tess apologizes to Matt. He accepts the apology and they make up. Later that night, Jake visits Tess at home to tell her that he is taking the transfer. She tells him that she wants him to stay but he says that he has to find a way to move on because he isn’t keeping up with her anymore. Despite all this, they end up kissing.
Sunny is woken up by the same screaming that she heard the other night. She uses her computer to log into Kye’s account to check the surveillance feeds. She doesn’t see anything but Kye at his desk and an approaching shadow. This is where the episode ends.
Sight Unseen Review
I wouldn’t say this was a horrible episode, although it felt needlessly drawn out at times. Despite that, I still enjoyed it. I cannot believe that Jake is leaving even after Tess told him that she doesn’t want him to go. It will be interesting to see how this impacts their relationship from here on out. And, what is going on with Sunny? She is obliviously hearing something but is it manufactured or real? I guess we’ll have to wait and see how that plays out as well. All in all, a fairly interesting episode with a somewhat predictable twist. I’d have to give it a 5.8 out of 10.
