The episode opens with Helen Sheldon (Rhian Blythe) yelling hello from her porch. At Chapel Terrace, Sarah (Hanna Jarman) is walking alone after dark when she hears a noise behind her. She turns but doesn’t see anything, continues to walk, and hears another noise. Frantic, she rushes to her car, gets in, and drives away. Someone in a hoodie appears from the shadows. At Heddlu Police Department, DCI Alan Vaughn (Ioan Hefin) warns Anna Harvey-Jenkins (Eiry Thomas) that her claim has implications. She lied on the stand to send Paul Harvey (Ian Puleston-Davies) down for murder. DI Ffion Lloyd (Elen Rhys) arrests her on suspicion of perverting the course of justice. Later Sarah reports seeing a glimpse of someone in a black hoodie. DC “Mogsy” Morgan (Mali Ann Rees) takes her statement. Sarah, who is not a nurse, tells her that she didn’t see anyone when she drove away. At the police station, Anna empties her bag on a table. DS Rick Sheldon (Richard Harrington) asks her to remove her head wrap. She reluctantly removes the scarf. Seeing her bald spots, he agrees to let her wear it. She puts it back on and is escorted to an empty cell. A short time later, Rick doubts Anna’s claim. Ffion questions why she would change her story now. He suggests she is trying to help Harvey get a reduced sentence. She reminds him that Harvey is locked up and can no longer terrorize her. She says if her claim is true, Sian’s killer is still on the loose and goes quiet. He touches her arm. Ffion pulls back and tells him to go home to Helen.

Helen wakes up to find Rick in the shower. He tells her there was a development but best she knows as little as possible. She says after he left, she thought someone was in the garden but she never saw anyone. He promises they will get Abbi Rayner’s killer and embraces her. At the police station, Ffion watches Harvey’s interrogation video. Harvey refuses to answer questions. Rick terminates the interview. Harvey congratulates Ffion but says she is too good for him.

Day 3 – After repairing the lock in the garden, Rick urges Helen to call him and not to go outside if it happens again. Later, he barges in on Ffion putting on deodorant. She says Anna confirmed Harvey’s whereabouts on the night Sian Hinton’s body was found but retracted it after he was arrested. A short time later, she goes over the evidence with her team. She says Ryan Moss (Gwydion Rhys) has never been located and a positive pregnancy test was recovered from the caravan. DS Celyn Howells (Aled Pugh) tells them that Darrell Williams got a warning for cocaine possession. Helen says Anna has changed her testimony and is now saying Harvey was with her when Sian was killed. Mogsy informs them of Sarah’s claim. After the meeting, Ffion asks Rick to check the CCTV at Chapel Terrace. In the interrogation room, Anna suggests the nurse murdered in Cleddau Woods would still be alive if she had told the truth 12 years ago. She recalls Harvey accusing her of setting him up, strip-searched and raped her, and scrubbed her skin until it bled. She breaks down sobbing and pleads to go home.

Rick finds CCTV footage confirming Sarah’s story. Vaughn warns that Anna, who has terminal cancer, going to prison would be a media frenzy. He orders Ffion to release her on bail and hopes the CPS throws the charges out. She argues Anna’s claims cannot be ignored. Utilizing CCTV, Rick tracks the hooded man to the waterfront near Helsham Road. He zooms in to reveal Darrell smoking a cigarette. The next day, officers search the area. A traffic stop is set up to check vehicles. At the police station, Celyn informs Rick and Ffion that forensics never found DNA on Abbi or at the scene. She says it was the same in the Harvey murders. Moss sells his work to a local art gallery. The owner last saw him on Wednesday. There has been no activity on Moss’s bank account. Mogsy tells them that Abbie died from asphyxiation between 4pm and 7pm and had a facial laceration believed to be caused by a ring. Rick recalls Moss wearing a ring. She says Abbie was eight weeks into her pregnancy. Vaughn calls them into his office to inform them of his decision to name Moss a person of interest. She asks if it is a way to distract the media from the Harvey murders. He insists it is to put Moss in custody. Frustrated, she goes to the restroom. Lisa Redwood (Hannah Daniel) calls to tell her that Griff Lloyd (William Thomas) fell and is at the hospital.

Rick tells Helen that Moss may have killed Abbi to make it look like a copycat. She says he always seemed unhinged. He asks her to take the kids to her parent’s house until the case is resolved. Ffion greets her. Helen tells her someone may have been in her garden last night. Later, Rick holds a press conference to call on the public to help find Moss. At a store, several girls laugh at Mel Owen (Matthew Aubrey). At the hospital, Lisa watches the press conference. Mel watches the press release before leaving the store. A reporter asks Rick if Abbi’s murder is a copycat. Harvey and Helen also watch. Elsewhere, Griff insists on walking the rest of the way to his house. Moss waits until Lisa goes inside and follows her. Griff calls Ffion to tell her a man driving Lisa’s car.  She offers to send someone to pick him up. Frustrated, he ends the call. Rick asks Celyn to run an ANPR check on Lisa’s car. She tries to call Lisa who is lying on the floor. ARNP captures Moss driving her car. Ffion dispatches a patrol unit to 44 Goldbrook Road. She and Rick track Moss to Stackpole Hill. Moss emerges from Lisa’s car and takes off on foot. A pursuit ensues and ends with Rick taking him down and arresting him for Abbi’s murder. Upon arriving at the Lloyd home, police find Lisa tied up and gagged. Later at the police station, Ffion comforts a distraught Lisa. Rick informs her that a ring resembling Moss’ was recovered from the crime scene. Watching her take a caffeine pill, he says some things never change. She criticizes him for going after Moss because he could have been killed. Mogsy says Moss isn’t talking.

Ffion asks Moss what inspires his art. He says the woods, light, dark, and nature. She compliments his talent. He claims Abbi broke up with him but declines to provide the pin for his phone. She places the positive pregnancy test on the table. He denies killing Abbi. Rick says he restrained Lisa. Moss claims to have only wanted her car and expresses his anger for the police putting his picture on the news. His attorney demands a break. Vaughn informs Rick and Ffion that Harvey plans to file an appeal on the grounds that he was set up and the real Heart Knot is active again. A short time later, Ffion stresses the need to put Moss at the crime scene. Rick suggests charging him with stalking, and vehicle theft. Celyn says forensics cannot determine where Moss was when he called Abbi. In the interrogation room, Ffion tells Moss that he texted Abbi asking her to meet him in the woods where her body was found. She says they are on his side but he needs to help them eliminate him as a suspect. His lawyer warns she is getting near to coercion. Moss claims to have lured Abbi into the woods because he never wanted her to come to the cottage. He denies going to the woods. Rick shows him a photo of the ring found at the crime scene. Moss tells them that Abbi went psycho when he denies being the father. He shoved her and threw the ring at her. He insists she was trying to trap him. Thrilled with their success, Rick embraces Ffion. Celyn receives a message about a call that Moss made at 4:31pm to Lisa’s workplace on Friday. She calls Lisa and demands answers. Lisa claims to have purchased some art from him and Huw is controlling. She starts to say something about Rick but ends the call. Ffion throws her phone down. Lisa flushes some drugs.

Rick and Celyn goof around. Ffion receives a text saying Harvey, a pharmacist, hired Ryan when he was an art student. Rick suggests they drink more beer and address it tomorrow. She sends Lisa a text asking for a return call before going upstairs. Mel has a makeshift camp set up in the woods. Later, Mogsy and Celyn leave in a taxi. Rick finds Ffion having a fitful sleep upstairs. He removes her shoes and covers her with a blanket. The scene switches to Mel, with his back turned to the camera. He has a heart knot, with an R and J.

The One That Got Away Review

The plot is predictable, with a twist thrown into the mix from time to time. The intrigue is strong enough to keep most viewers watching. For what appears to be a low-budget series, the execution is fairly well done. It could use more action to break up the monotony of dialogue. The episode deserves a 5.9 out of 10.
