The episode begins in the past and shows Rebecca Walsh (Holliday Grainger) preparing for Lucia Blix’s (Beatrice Campbell) kidnapping. At one point, she lies to one of her old friends and tells them that Lucia is her daughter and has been taken from her.

In the present, Rebecca tries to comfort Lucia and even tells her that she is her real mother. She says that she was sick and Elisa Blix (Denise Gough) was only supposed to take care of her for a short time but decided to keep her.

Fred Blix (Jim Sturgess) turns himself in to the authorities and asks about Lucia in the process. One of the officers tells him that they arrested the hoaxer. This is all new news to Fred. DI Shona Sinclair (Bronagh Waugh) later calls Elisa and tells her that Fred handed himself him. Elisa doesn’t take the news so well and tears up her home.

The next day at work, Kaleb Negasi (Michael Workeye) tells Selma Desai (Ambika Mod) that the bosses are impressed with her hoaxer story and want her on the rest of the story. Sometime later, Selma does some digging and discovers that Elisa was born in a religious commune in Eyton. Kaleb authorizes her visit.

The first person Selma finds at the compound recognizes Elisa, although Elisa is a bit older than her. It appears that the police have also recently been by to speak with Elisa’s mother. Deborah Stanton tells Selma that she didn’t spend much time with Lucia and the last time she saw her had to be 5 years ago. Deborah also tells her that she and Elisa didn’t see eye to eye about the compound and Elisa would cut herself out as soon as possible.

When Elisa picks Fred up from the police station, Shona tells them that they’ve identified the man who grabbed Lucia in the CCTV footage. His name is Milan Matkovic, he lives in France and is involved in people trafficking. Neither Fred nor Elisa recognizes him or Laure Claes. Fred’s financial difficulties also come out in this meeting but he swears it has nothing to do with Lucia being taken. As for the money, he says they spent it on everyday things.

Selma goes back to the lady she met when she first arrived at the compound to ask questions about Elisa. The lady agrees to speak with her if they trade shoes. The lady tells her that Elisa was difficult and Deborah pushed her away. The lady also tells her the last time Elisa was at the compound was when her father died.

Lucia has breakfast with Josie and Rebecca during which Josie shows her old baby photos. Lucia sees a photo of her being held by Nicolas. Her birthmark is also clearly visible. Sometime later Rebecca goes to a café and gets online using her photo. While checking her fake social media profile, she learns that Milan and Laure have been identified. She calls Milan and asks him where the car is. He isn’t too happy about the call but tells her the car is in the place they agreed upon. Rebecca later goes looking for the car but only finds a piece of the rearview mirror.

Imaani sees Elisa’s post about Milan and shares it with Selma. Sometime later, Selma tells Kaleb what she learned at the compound. She also asks to write a piece about it. Kaleb gives her the authority. Not long after this, Elisa reads about the story online and shares it with Fred. Fred promises to call his lawyer buddy and have him launch a complaint.

Marcus Turner decides to send Elisa his letter from prison. After doing so, he runs into Callum, who has just found the magazine about Lucia in his cell. Callum briefly gives him a hard time but doesn’t do anything.

Anton, a neighbor of Rebecca’s, introduces himself and gives her a bottle of wine. Later that evening, Josie asks if they can talk to him if they see him again. Rebecca says that will eventually go out and make friends but they need to be careful because Lucia was already taken from them once. Lucia has nightmares that night and Rebecca tries to comfort her.

Selma gets a tip that the French police searched a home north of Lille and found Lucia’s blood. Selma wants to write the piece but Kaleb tells her not while the complaint is out. He does promise her another story if she can find something substantial.

Shona tells the Blixs about the DNA being found.

Meanwhile, Rebecca takes the girls to a local beach to swim. While there she not only sees a man reading a magazine about Lucia, but she runs into her old friend from the beginning of the episode.

Lucia looks at photos of a man who is supposedly her father. Rebecca tells her that she will see if she can find some more. She goes to a secret hiding spot in her closet, gets out a computer, and creates more photos. This is where the episode ends.

The Stolen Girl Review

Things took a big twist there until the end. I don’t want to say too much but it would have probably been better if they waited at least another episode to make the end reveal. For a second there, I was almost convinced that Lucia was Rebecca’s daughter. Other than that, the episode was pretty lackluster as usual. It was nice to get to see things from Rebecca’s perspective and for that, I’d have to give the episode a 5.5 out of 10.
