Step Dave Review

This television series was requested by a visitor. I wasn’t even familiar with Step Dave to be honest. The foundation for the series is good. We have the young playboy that falls in love with the mother with multiple children. It isn’t exactly original, but the premise should work well. The relationship between Dave and Azza is interesting and authentic. I am not a big fan of the over-the-top humor, but I could easily see why people would love the series.

To the show’s credit, the episode got much better after things slowed down. A 6.5 out of 10 is awarded to the opener.

The Loch Review

Unfortunately, I never really could get into The Loch. The show had plenty of potential, but the story never lived up to the enormous hype. It was even more disappointing, since it was billed at as Broadchurch replica of sorts. Plus, the casting was actually very good. Laura Fraser and Siobhan Finneran should’ve been a dynamic duo. This relationship here was just awkward and flat most of the time. The finale itself was fairly predictable.

I had a suspicion from early on that Kieran was up to no good. I am sure I am not the only one. It appears that viewership for The Loch dipped lower and lower as the series progressed. I doubt we’ll see a second series and I’d be surprised to see one commissioned. Even the brother switching in the end couldn’t save The Loch. I wanted to like it, but couldn’t force myself to do so.

The finale deserves a 5 out of 10. Catch up with previous recaps of The Loch now!

He asks her about the courtroom battle. Then, he gives her some good news. The ban has been shortened significantly. At the end of the episode, Francis enjoys corned beef with Seamie. Seamie admits the food was found at the dump.

My Mother and Other Strangers

The majority of the second episode was mainly bland and forgettable. However, the uplifting moment in the end made the episode pretty good. This is exactly what happened with the opener as well. And, I question whether or not viewers will stick around for the big payoff. It is clear Rose is going to stray from Michael soon enough. Who wouldn’t? Michael is totally miserable. His misery is off putting even for the viewer.

As for Barney, the guy is equally creepy and pathetic. It is definitely hard not to feel sorry for him. In the end, it is likely Emma will come around and accept his advances. Francis and Seamie are definitely high notes. Their childish antics add a little humor to the massively bleak show. The episode was decent, but it could have been much better. A 6.5 out of 10 is deserved. Catch up with previous recaps of My Mother and Other Strangers now!

Born To Kill Review

Born To Kill isn’t perfect. In fact, it doesn’t even come close. There are plenty of plot holes and the dialogue can be a bit cheesy from time to time. Nevertheless, there is something oddly alluring about the series. Perhaps it is the unique story? Or maybe it is the creepily good performance by Jack Rowan? Who knows? Still, I find myself entranced by the show for some odd reason.

Jack Rowan plays the role perfectly. He definitely stands out among the rest of the cast. The awkward relationship between Chrissy and Sam is also compelling. I am intrigued to see where the show takes the couple in the future. It is certain they’re going nowhere good fast. The second episode was excellent. An 8 out of 10 is deserved. Seven Types of Ambiguity Review

Another excellent episode of Seven Types of Ambiguity. Anthony Hayes delivered a spectacular performance to top off a great episode. This episode was definitely packed full of humor, but it was depressing below the surface. The Mitch character just wanted to be loved and accepted. In the end, he came very close to getting both. Unfortunately, the guy is just incredibly unlucky.

However, he is likely the smartest character in the series. He is the only one that has even thought about connecting the dots between Simon, Anna and Joe. Was Mitch traveling down the right path? I believe he was onto something. This episode was the best yet. A 9.5 out of 10 is deserved. Catch up with previous recaps of Seven Types of Ambiguity now!

Fearless Review

I am glad Fearless is finally over. I wanted to get into the series and desperately wanted to like it. Sadly, I couldn’t force myself to do so. The finale made things even worse. The big surprise that Matthew was involved wasn’t a surprise at all. And, the twist about Laura being Rachel was cheesy. Emma supposedly masterfully trapping Matthew into exposing himself was too easy and didn’t help matters any. On top of that, Linda’s family was completely forgotten.

Fearless didn’t seem to be a big audience grabber, so I doubt it’ll get a second series. I’ll admit that I am glad. The finale was disappointing as was the entire series really. A 5 out of 10 is deserved. Catch up with past recaps of Fearless before you go.

German propaganda is heard on the radio, but it is quickly shut off. Ned (Des McAleer) speaks about the dump and scarlet fever. This sends Francis home in a hurry. He cleans the toy airplane as quickly as possible, before Rose enters. He lies and insists he was cleaning his hands with the chemicals.

My Mother and Other Strangers

The 3rd episode of My Mother and Other Strangers definitely hit the right notes. This episode didn’t feel flat or empty like the previous two. Suffice to say, it was the best addition to the series this far in. The introduction of scarlet fever and the loss of life helped to build up the drama and bleakness of the episode. It was also intriguing to watch three of the main characters place the blame on themselves.

One thing that I have noticed is that Francis doesn’t seem to think very highly of his father. In most of the narrations, Francis speaks highly of his mother, but not his father. There definitely seems to be some animosity there. This episode scores a 7.5 out of 10. Catch up with previous recaps of My Mother and Other Strangers before you go!

My Mother and Other Strangers Review

My Mother and Other Strangers has definitely improved since the second episode. Perhaps I have developed a stronger relationship with the characters? Either way, there seems have to been more emotion in the 3rd and 4th episodes. This episode put a lot of the backburner to focus on Rose and her sister. Vera’s struggles with the loss of her husband and baby led to Rose confronting her own inner dilemma.

Nevertheless, it seems Rose is still torn between Michael and Captain Dreyfuss. Now that Vera is out of the way, she’ll need to make a decision and she’ll need to do so quickly. Was the kiss with Ronald a one time thing or will it build into something bigger? Will Michael be able to win his wife over once again? Only time will tell. The 4th episode scores a 7.5 out of 10. Seven Types of Ambiguity Review

The 5th episode might not have been as good as the previous, but it was still excellent. The courtroom drama was gripping. It felt surprisingly authentic and not overly dramatic. Simultaneously, the relationship between Alex and Gina was intriguing. In the end, Alex simply wasn’t over his wife. Poor Gina was used by Alex in a last attempt to win back his wife. Does Alex’s situation parallel with Simon’s? Or does Anna actually reciprocate Simon’s feelings?

Hopefully the truth is unveiled in the 6th and final episode. It will be interesting to see what Anna has to say and who has been telling the truth. The episode was excellent. A 9 out of 10 is deserved. Catch up with previous recaps of Seven Types of Ambiguity right away.

Seven Types of Ambiguity Review

The finale was definitely different that what I expected. It had plenty of twists and turns and kept me guessing from start to finish. The ending will likely disappoint many, since it was somewhat open ended. However, we could easily suggest that Simon’s plan worked out in the long run. Perhaps Joe and Anna opening up to one another was a step in the right direction for their relationship? It seems they kept those feelings inside for a long, long time.

Did Simon’s scheme finally pay off? While I thought the ending was satisfying, I wouldn’t mind see additional episodes either. It would be nice to see Don punished. Plus, I’d love to know where Simon went from there. We are left to our imagination I suppose. The series is definitely one of the best I have watched this year. The finale scores a 9 out of 10. Born To Kill Review

Born to Kill is a little depressing and a whole lot of creepy. Some things are a little bit cheesy and some of the acting can be hit and miss. Nevertheless, the disturbing story and the excellent performance by Jack Rowan make Born to Kill a must watch. In recent times, I do not believe there has been anything quite like Born To Kill. It is incredibly unique and that is a big plus when repetition is so common.

I’ve enjoyed each episode and can’t wait to see how the series ends. The 3rd episode scores an 8 out of 10. Catch up with past recaps of Born to Kill right now!

My Mother and Other Strangers Review

Now that the series has concluded, I can easily see why there is going to be a second season. The writers took a risk leaving the series with such a big cliffhanger. Nevertheless, it ultimately paid off. The series ending was very effective and left me wanting more. I want to see what happens now. Will Vincent send the family into poverty? Will Rose be able to break away from Michael and her family to experience true love with Ronald?

How will Rose react when she learns the truth about Ronald? My Mother and Other Strangers isn’t perfect, but it is alluring nonetheless. In fact, it has really grown on me and I’ve taken a strong liking to it and the lead characters. The finale was good and deserves an 8 out of 10. As the finale gets started, we see that Peter (Richard Coyle) has been released from prison. Meanwhile, Sam (Jack Rowan) is forced to meet with a shrink. Jenny (Romola Garai) watches from outside of the room. Sam speaks highly of his father and the opposite for his mother. He becomes visibly upset when the shrink speaks down to him. When asked about James, Sam confesses he didn’t really know him. When the session ends, the shrink tells Jenny that Sam idolizes his father and has no empathy for anyone else. She also admits Sam cannot be called a psychopath, because he is still too young. Sam calls his father outside. He agrees to meet with Peter at a certain destination later in the day. After Jenny joins Sam in the vehicle, Sam agrees to attend Cathy’s funeral.

born to kill finale recapSam also convinces his mother to schedule another visit at the prison. He does this to show that he doesn’t know about his dad’s release. Bill (Daniel Mays) helps Chrissy (Lara Peake) get prepared for the funeral. He notices the necklace. Before Bill leaves, he speaks with Margaret (Elizabeth Counsell). He tells her that he’ll give her two weeks, before he moves out with Chrissy. Margaret becomes distraught, but Bill doesn’t seem to care anymore. As the funeral gets underway, Sam speaks with Jenny about far worse deaths than Cathy’s. Sam doesn’t show any emotions during the funeral. After it is over, he tells Chrissy about his father being released. She encourages him to go and meet his dad. Bill tells Jenny about his decision to leave his mom’s place. Jenny admits it probably isn’t a good time to move their relationship forward.

Along the way, he tells his mother that he’ll be fine.

Born To Kill Finale

The Born To Kill finale wasn’t too shabby. It was a little predictable here and there, but the ending was fairly satisfying. We’ll have to make our own assumptions as to how things end up for Sam and the other lead characters. The series could easily be continued with Sam proceeding through a trial or being locked away in prison. In the end, Jenny and even Sam came to the realization that he was never going to change.

He was just like his father, but probably a little worse. The bashing to the head jogged his memory and confirmed that his mother was right all along. Would an accurate memory of his father changed anything? It is doubtful. The finale was good. A 7.5 out of 10 is deserved. Catch up with past recaps of Born to Kill right now!

During the first twenty minutes or so, nothing really happens. Here is quick recap. Some guy and his girlfriend dump a suitcase off of a cliff. It is clear a body is in inside. Robin Griffin (Elisabeth Moss) heads to work and tries to teach the new recruits how to arrest a suspect. Walker (Hoa Xuande) agrees to play the suspect role. He refuses to cooperate with Robin and begins asking why she would shoot him or something to that effect. This triggers something in Robin’s mind and forces her to think about her past. They get into an argument, before the boss shuts down the roleplaying. In the locker room, Robin meets with Miranda (Gwendoline Christie). Miranda speaks with Robin about the prostitution ring. Robin admits the leader turned state witness and got immunity for his testimony. When Miranda leaves, the male officers speak harshly about her to Robin.

elisabeth moss top of the lake series 2Then, Robin speaks with her boss, Adrian (Clayton Jacobson). She confirms she is doing good and is glad to be back at work. Adrian admits three detective inspectors were watching and walked out when Robin lost her cool. During this time, the suitcase begins floating to the surface. Adrian and Robin visit a nearby restaurant. Adrian asks about Robin’s recent disappearance. She admits her mother was dying and felt the need to get away. Eventually, the conversation turns to Al Parker’s case against Robin. Al is now claiming that the shooting was personally motivated. Robin argues with Adrian and admits she was nearly raped. Then, she gets up and rushes out. Then, Mary (Alice Englert) meets up with Puss (David Dencik). They head home to the brothel. There, Puss speaks with a bunch of foreign women about sex. He seems to be trying to teach them English. This goes on an unreasonable amount of time.

Then, we jump to a computer café of sorts. A bunch of nerds chat about sex for about ten or twenty minutes. Who knows? I shut it off at this point and switched over to Trend Crave on YouTube. One of the guys at the café seems to have been in a relationship with Cinnamon. The guy admits he was paying to spend time with her. The guy, Brett (Lincoln Vickery), seems freaked out that his girlfriend might’ve disappeared without telling him. Then, the show delves into even more stupidity. Robin sits on the very rock that the suitcase was slung into the water. Surprisingly, the suitcase doesn’t show up, so she returns home with groceries.

mary and puss top of the lake season 2Robin finds Dan getting a massage. Her apartment is filthy. Robin’s sister speaks with her in private. He explains he is no longer the same as he used to be. He is now clean and wants Robin to stop putting beer in the fridge. Her brother seems to be on the verge of kicking Robin out, as she begins to explain her turmoil. The brother explains that the room is Dan’s. Robin agrees to begin looking for a place this weekend. It is also revealed that Robin walked out on her wedding day. She apologizes to Liam. That night, Robin reads a letter from Mary thanking the receiver for giving her the gift of life. She looks up Mary’s address. In the morning, Mary returns home to her father. She explains that Alexander is coming for dinner. It becomes clear that Mary doesn’t like her step mother, Julia (Nicole Kidman). Julia encourages Mary to come and spend some time with them. Seconds later, they begin planning the dinner with Alexander.

It may be a mess, but it is in a good location. Adrian meets up with one of the foreign girls. He gives her a teddy bear and some money. Finally, the suitcase reaches the water’s surface. Puss has dinner with Mary. He tells the family about his falling out with his supervisors at Leipzig University. The conversation includes communists and feminism. Again, it feels absolutely pointless. The dinner goes on for entirely too long. Eventually, Julia begins to cry and Mary rubs salt in the wound. Puss explains to Mary’s dad that he came to ask for Mary’s hand in marriage. This leads to a big argument between Puss and Mary’s parents. Julia pleads with Mary not to get married. Mary leaves with Puss anyway. Robin shows up outside, but doesn’t go in. Then, Julia fights with Mary’s father and leaves. The dad takes Mary a piece of cake and finds Puss asleep on the bed. They speak together outside and Mary tells her father about her love for Puss.

A message comes in about a report from Bondi Beach. It is about the suitcase. Robin quickly agrees to go to the scene. She is told to take Hilmarson with her. She takes Miranda instead. They arrive at the scene and check out the body in the suitcase.

Top Of The Lake Review

Top of the Lake’s first season was spectacular. I loved it. When I heard there was going to be a second, I could hardly contain my excitement. Twenty minutes into the second season and I don’t want to watch any more. Jeez, I’ve never seen a series go downhill so quickly. The first season was so amazing, but the second one is terrible thus far. For the first twenty or thirty minutes, nothing happened. We got lots of sex talk, skimpy clothes, and overly dramatic nonsense.

I turned it off at this point and went to YouTube to watch Trend Crave, so I could finish my run. It was really that bad. I finished it up in a half arse way to get this recap written. If there are errors above, it is because I was frustrated with the episode and couldn’t wait to get to the end. Why did the show remove all of the old characters? Why is Robin still whining about something that happened 5 years ago? What are the characters’ names? Do I even care? Why god why? Why ruin such a good thing? Argh!

If it isn’t clear, I am disheartened and really depressed that Top of the Lake’s second series has started off so terribly. I suppose I’ll finish the season, but I will set my expectations much, much lower. The opener was horrible. A 4 out of 10 is deserved. Catch up older recaps of Top of the Lake now!

White Gold Review

White Gold isn’t going to be for everyone. In fact, it is probably going to tick off a lot of people with its outrageously politically incorrect humor. The series is a little bit racist, sexist and perverted. Some of the jokes fall flat. What can I say? It isn’t perfect and it doesn’t even come close. Nevertheless, I found it surprisingly decent. It is horrible, but in a good way.

I can’t quite pinpoint why I liked the episode, but I did. White Gold isn’t a homerun, but it was entertaining from start to finish. I felt the need to continue watching just to see what the characters would say next. We’ll see whether or not it can remain humorous enough to keep me locked in for the entire season. For now, the opener deserves a 6.5 out of 10.

In The Dark Review

As a big fan of MyAnna Buring, I really wanted to like In The Dark. Unfortunately, the first episode didn’t cooperate very much. It is lacking a great deal. I couldn’t connect with the characters and there is little to no emotion here. The only thing that really sparked an interest was the childhood event shared by Linda and Helen. There is nothing here that hasn’t already been done. Plus, it doesn’t seem to do anything exceptionally well.

The opener was sadly lackluster. I wasn’t locked in and do not feel compelled to continue watching. I will likely watch anyway, but my expectations have been lowered immensely. The opener scores a 6 out of 10.

Poldark Review

The second season of Poldark was a little hit and miss. The third started off strong and showed there is still plenty of potential here. The grown up version of Geoffrey was a great addition. He was snarky and humorous. It also feels like Demelza’s brothers will help to lift the series to a new level. Underneath it all, the struggle between George and Ross is undoubtedly going to continue.

I was hoping the Ross and Elizabeth romance would be put to rest, but that doesn’t seem likely now. Hopefully the side characters can help prevent the love triangle from becoming overwhelming. As always, it feels like something terrible is lingering right around the corner. The opener was great. It scores an 8 out of 10. Catch up with past season recaps of Poldark right now!

In The Dark

Two episodes in and I am already ready to give up on In The Dark. The opener wasn’t great, but the second episode was even worse. At this point, everything feels disjointed. Are we really going to build up two missing schools just to end it all in just a stupid hurry? From the commercial, it appears the next episode focuses on something entirely different. It was already difficult to develop a connection with the characters. Now, that is going to be impossible.

Finally, can Helen just go ahead and lose the baby please? She has been trying all season to induce an abortion. First, she lets a suspect jab her in the gut. Then, she grabs balls and risks getting hit again. And, let’s not mention Helen driving like a lunatic and slamming on the brakes. Sadly, there isn’t a whole lot to like about In The Dark.

The dialogue is enough to make anyone cringe. I was hoping it would get better, but it hasn’t even tried. A 5 out of 10 is awarded to the second episode. Catch up with past recaps of In The Dark now!

Poldark Review

While this is only the second episode, the third season this far in has been far better than the second. The show hasn’t focused too much on the love triangle with George, Elizabeth and Ross. That has been a blessing. Simultaneously, the introduction of Morwenna, Sam, Drake, and an older Geoffrey has been great. It seems the series has moved along at a good pace too. A lot has happened in just two episodes.

The episode was scary for Verity, but everything turned out well for her. How about Caroline and Dwight? Will their romance end prematurely? I sure hope not. Dwight was one of the only likable characters last season. We can only hope he doesn’t die this soon or at all. The episode was excellent. An 8.5 out of 10 is deserved. Top of the Lake Review

Boy, they’ve really destroyed this series. I was optimistic that it would get better when the body in the suitcase was discovered. It didn’t. In fact, the series hasn’t even made an attempt to improve. The writers have given us a total idiot in Miranda Hilmarson and none of the male characters are any better. It was a desperate attempt to try and make Robin Griffin look superior to everyone else. I hate when shows dumb down everyone just to make a single character looks so intelligent. It is obnoxious.

I am also repulsed by the sexualization for really no good reason. Every time we turn around, the writers are trying to turn Elisabeth Moss into a sex icon. Or, we’re getting cringey cock and balls jokes. I do not care about Nicole Kidman or Robin’s daughter. Stop focusing on this irrelevant drivel. Get on with the investigation and you could potentially save the series. At this point though, I regret it coming back.

Perhaps it would’ve been better as a single season? The second sure hasn’t doing anyone any favors. This far in, Top of the Lake’s second season has been a stark disappointment. The second episode scores a low 4.5 out of 10. Catch up with previous recaps of Top of the Lake now!
